
Leo Beenhacker, former manager of Real Madrid, Ajax and the Netherlands national team, has died at the age of 82.
Born in Rotterdam, Beenhacker began his career at Ajax between 1978 and 1981, where he led the club to the Eredivisie title before returning to manage the team in 1990, where he won another league title.
He had previously managed Real Madrid, leading them to three consecutive La Liga titles from 1986, and returned to the team in 1992, earning the nickname “Don Leo” in Spain. After hearing the sad
news, Real Madrid paid tribute to the great legend, saying: “Real Madrid, the president and the board of directors are deeply saddened by the passing of Leo Beenhacker, the legendary coach of the club who led Los Blancos from 1986 to 1989 and in 1992.”
“Real Madrid would like to express our condolences and love to his family, the clubs and all those who loved him.”

coached the Netherlands national team for two spells and led them to the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Germany, the champions that year.
His coaching career included spells in several countries, including Grasshopper (Switzerland), Club América (Mexico), Istanbulspor (Turkey), Real Zaragoza (Spain) and Saudi Arabia.
After returning home, Beenhacker led Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title in 1999 before making history by leading Trinidad and Tobago to their first World Cup appearance in 2006 and then four years as Poland manager, leading them to Euro 2008.
